Alys Howe is an experienced harp teacher who enjoys working with beginner and intermediate students of all
ages. Her career as a teacher spans the breadth of Canada, from the East Coast of Cape Breton to the
Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. She has also taught at the undergraduate level for the University of Limerick.
An MA (First Class Honours) in Performance of Traditional Irish Music, Alys Howe studied Traditional Scottish
Music and Ethnomusicology at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and has won awards in competitions
of Scottish harp playing. Prior to her specialization in Celtic music, Alys developed her classical background
taking harp lessons from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra harpist Elizabeth Volpe, later studying both the pedal
(concert or classical) and the lever (Celtic) harp with Sharlene Wallace at York University, where she graduated
with a BFA Hons. in Music Performance.
Alys is qualified to offer tuition in both traditional Irish and Scottish styles of performance, as well as harp
lessons in general good technique for classical harp. As a harp teacher she encourages creativity in all students
wishing to play harp, and takes an approach tailored specifically to the needs of each individual student. Teaching
for various schools of music, Alys also offers private and group lessons at various locations in the Vancouver lower mainland.
